Gourmet ice cream hits the spot in dog days of summer

"Gelato is Italian-style ice cream made with whole milk and cream, but it still has one-third fewer calories than American ice cream," said YoLo employee Elizabeth Fletcher. There's certainly no shortage of gourmet options in Jackson, from the old-fashioned ice cream parlor inside Brooks Shaw's Old Country Store and a couple of Baskin-Robbins locations to Maggie Moo's, Sweet Cece's, Green Frog Coffee Co. and YoLo. With all the variety and personality at each one, a person could try a new flavor or combination of flavors every day of the summer. And gelato is whipped, so it has less air than American ice cream, so it is really thick and creamy. Most people won't argue with the idea that the best place to be when it's this hot outside is an ice cream shop. Even better, most frozen treats are made on-site at these locales every day. YoLo isn't a franchise but is the sixth store opened by the gelato and frozen yogurt business, whose home base is Memphis. "We make it fresh every day, and we use the best ingredients, too.

Mary Dee Heller says there are always new designs for the seasons and some holidays, and when the hay begins to look tired, it’s used for mulch around the farm. There have been letters (Mary Dee says she’s kept them all) cakes, candy and flowers left at their home in appreciation of the ever-changing hay art that grace the perfect spot. “I couldn’t do it without him,” May Dee Heller says of her husband’s part in the creations, so it was only fitting to help a newlywed. “We just love to do it,” she says of the July 4 firecracker, a head with a mortarboard, birthday cakes, turkeys and deer. All the decorations for the hay sculptures come from things found on their farm. Although the theme might be the same, no two have been alike, she said.
