My mother used to knit once in a while, although she got somewhat discouraged when our dog ate most of a wool sweater she was making for my father. Knitting was for ancient people, like my 35-year-old mother. The flashing yarn and needles fascinated me, so sometimes she would set me up to do some simple knitting. Besides, I was pregnant, and knitting seemed an appropriate pastime. Fast-forward to the first time I quit smoking, in 1968, and I took up knitting as a way to keep my hands busy. Before long I would take note of the lopsided strip I was creating, abandon my project in disgust and go climb a tree or something.

Philip was invested with his chain of office by retiring president John Lackenby and in turn presented Ken Budge with the vice-president’s chain. John said he had received tremendous support from Peter Ayre, a highly efficient treasurer, Grant Findlay, who, as secretary, was the backbone of the club, vice-president Philip Wilson, Bert Gray, their registrar, and Jim Turner, whose... John said it had been a great year for him. Thanks were extended to the Inner Wheel Club, the Robson family at Horncliffe, Coun Hazel Bettison, and so many others who helped them. His president’s night had been a great success and the Spirit of Sport event for the disabled had attracted a large number of competitors from a wide area. The club had completed its work in supplying water and sanitation to Burkina Faso, resulting in thousands of lives being saved.
