Happiest to be under the sea

His passion for diving has sent him on more than 315 dives on more than a dozen trips, from Belize to Bimini and from the Turks and Caicos to Tobago, with stops at islands in between. The retired educator didn't make a real open-water dive until 2002, when he took a friend up on an offer to tag along on a dive trip to Grand Cayman. The 65-year-old can list a dozen reasons why diving has become a passion, from photographing what he sees under the sea to the simple peace he enjoys. Dives on Australia's Great Barrier Reef and the Galapagos Islands are on his bucket list for the future. Jim Grace got his basic scuba-diving certification more than 15 years ago so he could perform underwater work for the pool maintenance and repair company he operates. He was thrilled recently to be joined by his son and daughter-in-law on a dive. The resident of Lake of the Woods in Orange County has plans to hit the British Virgin Islands and St. Lucia this fall.

Unique life under the waves

It is difficult to know where to look and which way to go. Huge schools of fish seem to stare at us as they shelter from the current behind the pier's pylons, which are completely covered with coral and creatures such as starfish and nudibranchs. Even from on the pier, massive schools of fish can be seen thronging in the water, giving a glimpse of the extraordinary marine environment. Marine life has been left to flourish and more than 80 species of fish thrive under the pier. Built in 1964 to receive parts to build the US naval communication station which is still operational nearby, the Navy Pier has become a home for so much marine life because of its seclusion. Fishing was banned from the pier years ago, boat traffic is restricted and the area is closed off to the general public because it is defence land. With a giant entry step, divers plunge 3m from the pier into the ocean.

The NOAA Coral Reef Watch (CRW) satellite coral bleaching monitoring shows sea surface temperatures continue to remain above-average throughout the wider Caribbean region. SILVERSPRING, Maryland -- According to the NOAA Coral Reef Watch monitoring system, coral bleaching is likely in the Caribbean in 2010. Scientists are already reporting coral bleaching at several Caribbean sites and severe bleaching has been reported from other parts of the world.
